MEDICINE HORSE TOURS
SANDY SHORES RESORT & MARINA
HISTORICAL TOUR
AUG 12, 2023
Join us for a fun-filled day with historical narration and transportation from Saskatoon to Sandy Shores at Lake Diefenbaker. Once there, we will tour the area and learn the vision of this enterprise before boarding the Houseboat about 10 am.
This houseboat tour offers a unique perspective of the area where the buffalo roamed, and the indigenous people lived during the summer preparing the buffalo jumps and buffalo pounds. Hear about the customs, visions, and tragedies of these nomadic people of long ago. As food became scarce, this southern part of the South Saskatchewan River was the site of several fierce battles with devastating results between the Plains Cree and the Blackfoot tribes.
Several of the wise old chiefs took their people to the sacred Buffalo Child Rock (Mistusinne), now under the waters of Gardiner Dam. As the very early explorers came and then the missionaries and diseases, the landscape of this area changed, never to return.
Captain Palliser’s expedition escorted by Maskepetoon, arrived and explored this area. Henry Hind arrived the next year meeting and documenting Sandhills Cree customs and tragedies of the previous years with the Blackfoot and sharing oral history that Hind documented.
Soon the NWMP arrived followed by government officials with the signing of Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 which changed life on the prairies for indigenous people forever.
The very early ranchers came and so did the cowboys who trailed cattle up the famous Chisholm Trail. Finally, the sodbusting farmers and their families arrived and built the communities we see today. Some of these communities are still thriving today while others have disappeared. Hear of the contributions by the brave pioneer women, the Church and the women’s community groups.
